Chris Mello Scholarship Fund

The Christopher Mello Scholarship is awarded annually at the Harrison-Rye football game. Since its establishment after Chris’ passing on September 11, 2001, fifty scholarships have been awarded to graduating student-athletes from Harrison and Rye.

Chris Mello was a 1994 graduate of Rye High School who was killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. A talented student-athlete, Chris excelled in baseball, football, and basketball at Rye. After high school, Chris attended Princeton University and later worked as a financial analyst in Baltimore and Boston.

To honor Chris’ memory, his father, Douglas Mello, with the help of family and friends, established a special scholarship in his name. Each year, at the Rye-Harrison football game, a player from both the Rye and Harrison teams receives the award. The scholarship recognizes sportsmanship, competitiveness, academic achievement, and leadership, all traits that Chris exemplified. Over the past 24 years, fifty student-athletes have received the award.

This year’s game will be played at Rye on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
